I have an 840 machine and wonder if it is possible to engrave the vertical edge of a 50mm thick 300mm dia chopping board
with lettering....am I asking the impossible for a flat bed machine with only 3 axis ?

You'd need an extra build of a 4th axis (a rotary table - like this) plus the spindle adapter which holds a proxxon with a 90° angle. this one

With some tweaking of machine parameters and the g-code you would not even need special programs.
