Stepcraft 2 Watt laser was created by CNCMiller
Hello all,

I noticed that Stepcraft has the Laser DL445 EN now in store. It is supposed to be a 2 watt laser.
But the information given by stepcraft is very lean.
There is no additional information to decide if this is a good buy.
The instruction manual says:
"INTENDED USE
The STEPCRAFT DL445 is an engraving and cutting laser for easy-to-cut work piece materials"
and under item 5.8
Is a table with materials witch are tested, but that is quit unsatisfying, nowhere is balsa mentioned or birch plywood or similar materials.

Does anyone know if this Laser is only good enough for engraving or can it also be used for cutting thru balsa wood and until what thickness? I want to cut thru balsa up to 4 mm. Not as result a burned pile of ash

Who has any information about laser systems?

There is one guy in the German forum who just got his laser (scroll down): Laser So lets wait what he will tell us....

Another one has seen it on the model trade fair in Dortmund that cutting 3mm MDF is possible with an acceptable speed.

I just have been at the Intermodellbau fair in Dortmund.
Stepcraft has a booth there and the laser is shown.
I also got the information that the laser is intended mainly for engraving and not cutting, nevertheless there were pieces shown which have been cut out of 3mm plywood.

I guess it should be easy to find out via a Google search what a 2 Watt laser will cut.

I could use it to prepare wood veneer between 0.5 and 1.5 mm thick if the price isn't too great and if it will cut wood of this thickness.

A quick search uncovers comments like:

"[2 Watt, 445 nm diode lasers] are perfect for marking wood, but cutting is more problematic - I've cut 5 mm Balsa-sheets with 4 passes, but cutting 3 mm birch plywood stopped at the first glue-slice ..."

https://www.photonlexicon.com/forums/showthread.php/22650-Can-you-sugges-a-laser-that-can-cut-3-4-mm-plywood

although somebody else used a 2.5 Watt laser to cut 3 mm thick plywood but a compressed air supply is recommended...

It is unwise to early adopt anything, particularly Stepcraft equipment.

In the Manuel for the laser, there is a table what the laser can cut.

But the table is just in German :(
