Track roller tightening was created by jvalencia
If I tighten them firmly, as the manual implies, they won't turn at all.

Is it normal? For them to turn freely, the screws cannot be tight (in my case). I fear that vibrations will make the screws fall apart.

How are yours?

I have the same problem, and only a german manual, so not sure I'm following it properly. How did you fix it?

My problem was that I left out a golden ring, because they, apparently, came already mounted. But you have to remove the bearing and insert the ring inside.

That way they will roll freely.

I had the golden rings in there from the start. I haven't tightened it much, just enough that I could see that the rollers stopped moving. If I loosen the screws enough to let the rollers run freely they are not tight enough to stay in place. Maybe the brass rings are to short. I have not mixed parts from different rollers either, but kept them separated and assembled one at a time. The bearings seem to be fine, but I really dont know how to proceed, maybe I should contact support at Stepcraft.

Hi bluskies,

The "golden ring" that sits between the two bearings is a critically dimensioned brass spacer that ensures there is a controlled preload on the two ball races. Each roller will have a matching spacer selected to compensate for the machining tolerences of the outer part of the ball race seating. Whatever you do don't "adjust" this spacer or swap with one from another roller!!!!

If the roller cannot be turned easily when the mounting is fully tightened, then it is possible that the seating washer that sits beween the mounting plate and the bearing inner is fouling the ball cage.

When assembling my SC420/2, I found that, since the washers are stamped, they end up slightly dished and must be mounted the correct way round to avoid fouling. If I remember correctly, the shiny side needs to be adjacent to the bearing inner race. Fully tightening the mountings should not in any way affect the easy turning of the roller.

Hope this helps your problem.

There is no problem, however simple, that cannot be made more complicated by thinking about it.

The sc2-04 assembly video shows you the correct orientation of the washer:

Note, that at least for me, I needed to manually turn the rollers few times, and after that they started rolling more freely.
